    Letter To Asim Martin

    October 31st, 2007

    Hon. Earl Asim Martin
    Minister of Works
    Needsmust
    Basseterre
    St. Kitts

    Sir,

I write on behalf of my constituents in the community of Romneys Ground, Sandy Point. They have been living in a new development for the past seven years that has apparently been abandoned by your Ministry. The infrastructure in the area is very poor and in need of an immediate and substantial upgrade to make the residents comfortable.

~~Adz:Left~~ The roads remain unpaved which means that water collects when it rains and it is very dusty when it is dry. This dusty dirt track constitutes a health hazard to those with respiratory difficulties in addition to accelerating the wear and tear on residents’ vehicles.

However, the worst difficulty facing the residents is the lack of modern drainage and water facilities. Drains were put in but they are incomplete so that they end in an area of which has become a catchment area for stagnant water. There is a stench from the stagnant water and it’s a breathing ground for mosquitoes.

In light of the outbreak of dengue fever in the region this drainage problem has become a dangerous health hazard about which the residents are, quite understandably, very concerned.

In addition to this, residents had to run their own pipes from up on the main road as there is no water main in the area. As such their water meters are not next to their homes but a few hundred feet up the road.

In this day and age people should not have to resort to such ad hoc arrangements in order to have basic modern facilities, especially as it will result in the problems that are being encountered because there has been no proper coordination or planning.

A resident has even had to put in his own light poles which have now become rotten and may fall down at any time. As a matter of fact, the two light poles in the area are not suitable for the purposes that they serve as they are actually two old poles which were previously utilized and taken out of usage by a company here in the Federation.

The residents wish for you to visit and see the conditions that they are living under so that you can understand how much they are being inconvenienced. Most importantly, they are asking for a speedy resolve to their plight. Hence, the roads must be paved, proper drainage system implemented, water mains must be laid and the replacement of the rotten poles replaced with new ones and adequate lighting installed.

Please be aware that this correspondence will be circulated to the local media.

    Sincerely,
