Press Release

ROADTOWN Tortola BVI, 9th August 2011 - As the Acting Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Communications and Works, it is my duty to respond to any disparity that may have arisen following recently published news articles.

As such, I have decided to issue this statement to bring clarity to the matter regarding the appointment process of the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) to the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (TRC).

It is correct that recommendations by the TRC Board should be sent to the Minister, Honourable Julian Fraser, RA, in order to effect the CEO’s appointment. However, I would like to make it clear that at present, Hon. Fraser has not taken any decision on who that person will be, contrary to what is being speculated on public forums.

The Ministry of Communications and Works does not normally expect information regarding the status of an ongoing appointment process, be released by someone other than the Minister, on whom such a decision depends. It is unfortunate and unusual that such information be distributed to the media considering its prematurity.

Presently, the Ministry is still in the decision making process and will in its correct capacity approve the most capable individual to assume the role of Chief Executive Officer of the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission.

With that said, it should also be known that the Ministry of Communications and Works continues to strive for excellence in assisting the development of the Telecommunications industry in the Virgin Islands.
