Nevis Island Government keen on the delivery of quality service

CHARLESTOWN NEVIS (NOVEMBER 01, 2007) -- Junior Minister in the Ministry of Communications and Works with special responsibilities for Public Utilities Hon Carlisle Powell, said the Nevis Island Administration (NIA) was keen to improve the quality of services provided to the public by all government owned and operated agencies in its effort to make life better for all Nevisians.
The Minister made the disclosure on Thursday November 01, 2007, at the Mount Nevis Hotel, while he addressed senior staff members of the Nevis Electricity Company Ltd. (NEVLEC), at the start of a two-say workshop on Personal Productivity.
He regarded the NEVLEC and the Caribbean Electricity Utility Services Corporation (CARILEC) sponsored workshop as an investment in the future of the company.
“Training of the human resource in a company is a tremendous investment in the future of the company. I am delighted that NEVLEC has identified “Personal Productivity” as the topic to be explored over the next two days. I am sure that the Human Resource Department was quick to recognise that if personal productivity improves, the company will benefit by getting more out of its workers,” he said.

The Minister told the workshop participants that they should be prepared to lead the way in the provision of quality service, as the NIA continued to explore alternative sources of revenue in the area of wind energy and geothermal energy.
The new sources of energy were important he said as the Administration continued to see and unprecedented thrust in high end villa development and the expansion of the tourism plant.
Mr. Powell expressed the view that in a modern world, it was incumbent on the public to challenge every person who provided a service to deliver a world class service. He admonished persons to maintain the high standards set and not lower the bar for convenience.
“We must not accept mediocre service simply because that is the way it has always been in your business or in Nevis. Every member of management along with fellow employees must play a serious role in challenging workers who fall short of the mark. It is our role to establish high standards and hold fast to the standards set. Instead of lowering the bar for some, we must challenge the ineffective workers to rise to meet the standards set by us,” he said.
~~Adz:Left~~The Minister also urged the participants to make the best use of their time at all times in light of NEVLEC’s bold move to improve and increase its senior staff’s personal productivity which would increase the quality of service provided by the company to its clients.
Ms. Angela De Coteau of the Arthur Lok Jack Graduate School of Business of the University of the West Indies, St. Augustine Campus in Trinidad and Tobago will facilitate the workshop which she said was designed to revolutionise personal productivity.
According to Ms. De Coteau, the workshop would allow participants to understand “productivity” and its effects on personal effectiveness and to identify self-defeating behaviors that decrease effectiveness.
At the end of the workshop the participants would be better able to set priorities which linked individual and organisation goals; Develop an understanding of the effects of disorganisation; develop effective techniques to deal with time wasters such as interruptions; understand the importance of balance and how to delegate effectively; set up and use an effective time management system which would be suitable to individual needs; to be aware of effective staff meeting strategies and to understand the role of fluctuating energy levels.
