BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – HEAD COACH for the St. Kitts Under-13 Cricket Team, Junie Mitcham is scheduled to leave the island tomorrow (Aug. 12) for Antigua, where he will be lending his expertise in a cricket preparation camp for the West Indies U-15 Training Squad.

Mitcham will operate as Head Coach for the Antigua leg of the two-week camp, which will run from August 12 – 27. The other leg, which will run concurrent, takes place in St. Lucia.

The coach told SKNVibes that he would be joined by other English Cricket Board-certified Level III Advance Head Coaches from across the region, and together they would provide facilitation for the camp.

According to a press release received by SKNVibes, “Mitcham explained that he is honoured to be amongst coaches chosen and entrusted with the responsibility to shaping and preparing the future of stars of West Indies Cricket. He also promises to use this opportunity for his personal development and development of cricket in the Federation. He is eagerly looking forward to the opportunity to impart his knowledge and expertise to the players, helping them to further develop their own skills, talent and knowledge of the game.”

In an interview with this publication, Mitcham explained that although he would be part of the coaching staff for the camp, it would be a learning experience for him, and that any information he would have gathered pertinent to the advancement of the sport discipline, he would use it for the benefit of cricket on St. Kitts.

“An opportunity like this will help me to further develop the coaching and advancement of coaching in St. Kitts by bringing back the experience that I have gained from other coaches and the players, because I learn from them as part of my development. This will enable me to bring back new ideas and techniques, best drills to develop the players and also techniques in developing coaches as well.

“Coaching is an ongoing process and each one learns from each other because everyone has a different style of coaching. Passing on knowledge to other coaches is also part of my progress and development…it is part of helping other coaches to further develop themselves.”

The initiative is a collaborative effort between the West Indies Cricket Board and Sandals.

According to Mitcham, about 60 members of the squad are expected to participate in the Antigua leg of the camp.
