Press Release

BRADES, Montserrat August 12th, 2011 – Montserrat will be meeting with about twenty other officials next week in Antigua & Barbuda to finalise a Common Tourism Policy for the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) region.

Mrs. Evelyn Chalmers, who is presently acting Director of the Montserrat Tourist Board will be attending and contributing to the discussions.

“We have attended all of the previous meetings to put together the policy and at this meeting we will discuss any changes to the draft and then implementation,” Chalmers said.

The meeting is scheduled for August 16th and 17th 2011 and tourism officials have been reviewing the draft final Common Tourism Policy document to ensure that it is in line with their vision and plans for development of tourism within the OECS.

Consultations were held earlier this year in St.  Lucia and the MTB also participated in that process to identify and prioritise the key areas on which the policy should focus.

Some of the broad focus areas highlighted by the first workshop include: transportation; tourism awareness; product development; customs and immigration procedures; environmental and cultural sustainability and sustainable financing.

The March meeting also identified actions to address each of the policy focus area. The pending Common Tourism Policy is within the context of the OECS Economic Union as a single financial and economic space.
