Kittitian Daughter, Michelle Queeley-Roberts, does her country proud at the University of the West Indies

     Ms. Michelle Queeley-Roberts
Ms Michelle Queeley-Roberts, a daughter of Kittitian soil has done her country proud!  She beamed with pride and a high sense of accomplishment as she graduated with the highest class of Masters Degree from the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus, Barbados, on Saturday October 27, 2007.  She was awarded the Master of Philosophy in Educational Psychology having successfully completed a rigorous two-year programme of study at the said institution.

She was one of three students who graduated from her department on that day with the Master of Philosophy, and one of 70 students overall who received Masters Degrees.  In her programme of studies, Michelle maintained a remarkable ‘A’ average throughout her studies, and has received high commendation for her Dissertation of 80,000 words on School Violence in Barbados.

In all three of the examiners’ report on her work, Michelle was highly commended for the soundness of the dissertation, her excellent command of the English language, and for adding rich and new insights to the body of literature on school violence in the Caribbean context.  Michelle was told, “Congratulations Michelle.  You have done an excellent job!

The subject was worthy of study and your presentation allowed for a clear understanding of the research process.  The research was carefully carried out and well documented.”

This recent academic success of Ms Queeley-Roberts comes after graduating from the said institution in 2004 with First Class Honors in Literatures in English, where she received her faculty’s award for the most outstanding performance in the final year exams.  She was subsequently awarded a scholarship by the university and in 2005, while pursuing her Masters, she received the university’s Graduate studies award for academic excellence.  She was also recruited by the Department of Languages and Literature to teach a foundation language course, “Writing for Academic Purposes’.

~~Adz:Right~~ But for those of us who know the academic record that this ambitious and well-rounded young lady holds, her performance becomes little surprise to us.  Previous academic awards include the Student of the Year Award upon her graduation from the Sandy Point primary School.  In 1991 Michelle also graduated from the Sandy Point High School with 10 CXC subjects, a remarkable combination of Sciences, languages, and business –at the General Proficiency level.

With a steady eye on teaching as a career she opted to teach for two years at her alma mater upon leaving school (where she taught English Language and English Literature both at the CXC level; Spanish, History and Principles of Business) and then pursued a two-year Secondary level teacher training programme as a full time student at the St. Kitts-Nevis College of Further Education (Division of Teacher Education) in 1993.

Upon her graduation in 1995, she captured the awards for her outstanding performance in her areas of study.    Just before Michelle left for university, she was hailed as one of the mere 6 out of 79 students from across the Caribbean (and the only one from the Leeward Islands) who successfully completed the Commonwealth Diploma in Youth in Development Studies with distinction – again the highest level of success in the programme – from the Mona campus of the University of the West Indies.  In fact, she is placed on record as having gained the highest score in the entire region in four of the 13 modules.  This programme was pursued via long distance out of Anguilla.

When asked how she feels about her success, Michelle calmly remarked, “To God be the glory, great things He hath done!  I am a living testimony that I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.  I cannot find enough words to say how blessed I am to have been endowed with such remarkable gifts.  I am deeply proud of my accomplishments, and even more satisfied that I have done St. Kitts, my home country, and Anguilla, proud.”  Ms Queeley-Roberts swelled with pride on Saturday as she was showered by a host of family and friends who journeyed to Barbados from near and far to share in her success.

~~Adz:Left~~ Michelle credits her success mainly to God’s grace and mercies and takes this opportunity to laud the education system in St. Kitts where she received her primary, secondary and part of her tertiary education.  She expresses gratitude to all her teachers and to those who have influenced her life in one way or the other.  She is especially grateful to her guardians, the Rawlins family of Sandy Point (especially Daphne, Cavelle, Suzette, and Rosita Rawlins), with whom she was raised.

She says they never failed to provide her the love; care and support (spiritual, financial, social and other wise), while growing up and even now in her adult life.  She also thanks the congregation of the St. Anne’s Anglican Church and the Anglican Young People’s Association (AYPA) for equipping her with never-ending opportunities for personal growth and development.

She also grateful to her parents, Gwendolyn Queeley of Palmetto Point, and Joseph Phillip of Challengers village; and the rest of her Queeley’s family of Palmetto Point for their love and support.  Her close friends, Yvonne (Beth) Kelly and Jasmine Smith, are also given special mention for their overwhelming support and prayers throughout her years of study.

Michelle is also careful to mention the Government of Anguilla for providing the funding for her Bachelors degree and for facilitating her studies at the Masters level.  The University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus, also comes in for praise for awarding her a scholarship to pursue her Masters degree.

When asked about the next step for her academically, Michelle says, “It is definitely the doctorate.  I do not place limitations on my life.  I believe that God has blessed me with the ability to soar higher and I must fulfil that purpose here on earth.”  In fact, she is in the process of making arrangements to pursue her doctorate degree while serving her bond in Anguilla (starting with long distance classes) with a leading University in England.
