SKNTTA Grassroots Camp and ITTF Level I Coaching Course

Press Release

BASSETERRE St. Kitts, August 14th 2011 - The SKNTTA’s Grassroots Camp and ITTF Level I Course concluded on Saturday 13th August 2011 with a closing ceremony and certification for the campers and coaching demonstrations by for the attendees at the ITTF Level I course.

During the closing ceremony the parents congratulated the camp staff, for their time and energies in making the camp a success and encouraged the Association to host more activities of this nature aimed at keeping the kids engaged throughout the year. They also expressed an interest in seeing future junior table tennis competitions to showcase the skills of the camp attendees.

The Grassroots Camp boasted an attendance of 47 participants (between ages 4-15 years) along with 6 local coaches amassing 18 hours of practical coaching.  14 schools were represented at the Grassroots Camp with the majority of attendees between the ages of 8-13 years.

At the ITTF level I course, 6 individuals completed the required hours  to attain the ITTF Club/Community coaching and/or the ITTF Level I certificates. One of the expectation of the SKNTTA is that all attendees including the previous participants on the ITTF Level I course in 2004 and 2010 are expected to undertake coaching assignments within the community centers and neighbouring primary and secondary schools aimed at increasing the leveof participation in Table Tennis and building up the base of table tennis enthusiasts. To date the total number of coaches attending ITTF Level I course in St Kitts and Nevis are 50 persons (24 in 2004, 20 in 2010 and 6 in 2011).

The hope of the SKNTTA therefore, is that through the community coaching and after school projects, regular table tennis events of a reasonable standard would be played throughout St Kitts and Nevis.

Future activities are expected to be coordinated with the support of Ministry of Social and Community Development, Ministry of Education and Ministry of Youth Empowerment and Sports. Hence, I can say with great confidence that our new administration is on the right path in building the awareness of the sport to our youth and using it as a tool for development.
