Premier O'Neal congratulates CARICOM'S new Secretary-General

    ROADTOWN Tortola BVI, August 16th,2011 – Premier and Minster of Finance Honourable Ralph T. O’Neal, OBE, has joined with his regional counterparts in congratulating His Excellency Irwin LaRocque, a national of Dominica, on his recent appointment as the seventh Secretary-General of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM).

     

    Mr. LaRocque, who previously served as the assistant secretary-general for Trade and Economic Integration at the CARICOM Secretariat since 2005, assumed office on August 15.

     

    In a letter dispatched yesterday to the new secretary-general, on behalf of the Government and people of the Virgin Islands, Premier O’Neal stated, “You have demonstrated your commitment to serve the people of this region to the best of your ability,” adding, I encourage you to continue in that spirit as you take on this new role.”

     

    Secretary-General LaRoche has served the region in the areas of economic integration, regional and international trade, foreign affairs, and economic development and as a public service officer.

     

    “These different experiences will serve you well and have more than adequately prepared you for this current appointment and any associated challenges,” the Premier wrote.

     

    In giving the assurance of his highest consideration, Premier O’Neal added that he wishes the ambassador every success as he undertakes his new role.

     

    The Virgin Islands has been an associate member of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) since July 1991.
