ROADTOWN Tortola BVI, August 17th, 2011 – The Public Information and Education (PIE) sub-committee of the National Disaster Management Council (NDMC) is reminding the public of the importance of flood preparedness. We are currently in the Atlantic Hurricane Season and with a hurricane it is likely that heavy rains will fall that may cause flooding. A flood can be very destructive therefore being prepared is essential.

The public is asked to do their part in the preparation by ensuring areas around their homes are free from garbage and debris that may block drains; determine flood free routes to and from their homes; find out where the nearest evacuation shelter is located; in the event of an evacuation, prepare a plan that takes disabled persons, the elderly, children and pets into account, always monitor weather conditions and find out if your homes or businesses are located in flood prone area(s).

The aftermath of a flood can be a difficult time for persons especially if the effects of the flood have been devastating. Persons are encouraged to be proactive by preparing for any situation.

Throughout the month of August, messages focused on flooding will be aired on Radio Station ZBVI 780 AM. Additionally, the Deputy Director of Disaster Management, Mr. Zebalon McLean will be the guest on the Department of Disaster Management’s television show Focus highlighting the importance of flood preparedness. One of the GIS Radio Report will also focus on this important topic.

During the month flooding will be one of the topics on ZBVI’s Children Knowledge Power Hour and the Library Services Library Hour.

The National Disaster Management Council (NDMC) is chaired by His Excellency the Governor and coordinates disaster preparedness and response readiness activities.

The NDMC’s Public Information and Education sub-committee promotes public awareness of hazards and disasters, among other responsibilities.
