    ROADTOWN Tortola BVI, August 19th, 2011 - “Right now we are developing that unit,” Mr. Morris told VINO in an interview on Tuesday, August 16, 2011. Sixteen cameras will be placed at strategic locations throughout Tortola, and expected to be up and running by October.

     

    In addition to that, the force is currently in negotiations with the wireless providers to ensure the system is online and running smoothly

     

    On February 4, Government signed a $308,682 contract with Electronic Solutions for the purchase and installation of the CCTV cameras to help prevent, detect, and reduce crime in the Territory.

O'Neal,OBE, Permanent Secretary, Deputy Governor’s Office David Archer, Governor Boyd McCleary.According to a press release on the signing, Governor William Boyd McCleary had said that the funding for the initiative is made available through seized cash from proceeds of crime.

     

    The surveillance cameras are expected to help deter anti-social behaviours, assist in the identification, arrest and prosecution of offenders, and enable immediate deployment of law enforcement officers to strategic locations.

     

    Mr. Morris said that CCTV is also a way to assure the public that complaints about the abuse of authority by law enforcement agencies are substantiated with the review of tapes.
