Press Release

ROADTOWN Tortola BVI, August 20th, 2011 - The initiative, to raise funds for the formation of a Prison Welfare Association, was well received by the public as a number of persons made the time to journey all the way to Balsum’s Ghut and judging from what took place it was probably the best decision as everyone got into the act of singing and dancing, including Superintendent of Prison Mr. Richard Holder.

Mr. Holder ambitiously attempted the song “When a man loves a woman” and did not do a bad job at all. He then teamed up with Principal Officer Hypolite for “Sitting on the Dock of the Bay” before stepping up the pace with “Back to my Roots”, a song by the late Lucky Dube. The last song was so welcomed that a number of persons joined in the singing, while others got out of their seats to dance.

The more serious singers did an excellent job of also entertaining the crowd with songs such as “Rehab” and “From this Moment”.

Even the media joined in the fun as a reporter from the Beacon pulled one from way back “Weight” while a reporter from VINO tried with “Lady in Red”.

A number of the prison officers also took to the microphone and those who couldn’t get “tipsy” enough to attempt a song, danced and cheered along.

A few lucky persons were also treated to a tasty soup made by the Superintendent himself.

The event was open to the public and certainly lived up to the hype “great” as promoted on a flyer. Admission was free but funds were raised through the selling of food and drinks at very reasonable prices.
