BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, August 20th, 2011 (CUOPM) - The Secretaries-General of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) and the Central American Integration System (SICA) have agreed to strengthen the institutional relationship between their two secretariats.
The agreement came during a courtesy call on Wednesday 17 August, by newly-appointed CARICOM Secretary-General His Excellency Ambassador Irwin LaRocque on his SICA colleague, His Excellency Juan Daniel Alemán Gurdián, at the latter’s office in the organisation’s headquarters in San Salvador, El Salvador.
Secretary-General LaRocque was in El Salvador for the Third Meeting of the Heads of State and Government of CARICOM and SICA on Friday 19 August in San Salvador and was preceded on Thursday 18 August by the Second Meeting of Foreign Ministers of the two integration movements.
St. Kitts and Nevis’ Permanent Representative Her Excellency Jacinth Henry-Martin represented St. Kitts and Nevis’ Minister of Foreign Hon. Sam Condor.
One measure discussed as a means of strengthening the relationship was the exchange of visits by technical officers of both Secretariats. Secretary-General LaRocque also extended an invitation to his SICA counterpart to visit the CARICOM Secretariat Headquarters, Georgetown, Guyana.
Secretary-General Alemán said the Central American side was “excited that the two sub-regions had come together again”, given the opportunities that existed for synergies in a number of areas. He cited climate change, security, energy, food and nutrition security and communications technology as areas of possible collaboration.
SICA membership comprises Belize, who is also a member of CARICOM, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua and Panama, with the Dominican Republic as an Associated State.
Accompanying Secretary-General LaRocque on the courtesy call was CARICOM Secretariat Assistant Secretary-General Foreign and Community Relations, Ambassador Colin Granderson and Ms Glenda Itiaba, Chef de Cabinet in the Office of the Secretary-General.
