Press Release

ROADTOWN Tortola BVI, August 22th, 2011 – Traffic flow on the James Walter Francis Drive, the Territory’s four-lane highway, will see further improvement with the upcoming installation of traffic signals at the Wickham’s Cay II Intersection.

Work is expected to commence on August 23 with contractor JoClaud Enterprises Limited of Trinidad and Tobago.

In explaining the purpose of the traffic signals in the area, Minister for Communications and Works Honourable Julian Fraser, RA, emphasised concerns for road safety, saying, “Wickham’s Cay II continues to undergo development and expansion through land reclamation, building construction and improvements to the yachting marina facility.

Consequently, vehicular traffic to and from this area is now more demanding, thus causing the control of competing flows of traffic to be vital to road safety in this area.”

Honourable Fraser further explained, “Signalising the intersection will safely and efficiently allow vehicles travelling east bound on the James Walter Francis Drive to make a right turn entry on to Wickham’s Cay II and similarly vehicles would be able to make a right turn on exit out from the Cay.”

“It is important to note that several other options were considered prior to the Cabinet decision, but traffic signals at Wickham’s Cay II have been identified as the best way forward to provide a solution to safer accessibility to and from the Cay given the increasing volume of traffic,” said Hon. Fraser.

Referring to the project cost, the works minister said, “The low cost of the project is a demonstration of Government’s commitment to efficiency in project expenditure as the equipment to be utilised was taken from inventory.”

Honourable Fraser indicated that the installation process will cause some traffic delays in the vicinity of the intersection and is asking the public for their kind cooperation and patience for the duration of the major works from August 23, through September 2, 2011.

A total of three signalised intersections will be located on Tortola after the installation of the traffic signals at the Wickham’s Cay II Intersection; the others being located at the Station Avenue and James Walter Francis Intersection along with the Admin Drive and Waterfront Drive Intersection.

The installation of traffic signals marks Government’s commitment to the modernisation of the Territory’s roads infrastructure through the development of a roads safety programme.
