Conclusion of Success In English Summer Camp

By: Clare Greenaway, Press Release

Subject: The first ever, two week English summer camp came to a successful end on Friday, August 26, 2011.
Twenty six young people ranging from ages 11 – 16 participated in ‘TheSuccess In EnglishCamp’ from August 15 to 26, 2011 under the directorship of Clare Greenaway and Assistant Director Jennifer Williams.

During week one of the camp, students were introduced to the Public Library and its daily operations. Some students admitted that it was  their first visit and were fascinated by the many functions of the library. A number of students were awarded reading material after been quizzed by one of the librarians.

Week two,  the students visited  Romney Manor, home of Caribelle Batik. The students were given a demonstration of the process involved in the preparation of batik work. One child volunteered to paint a pattern on to the fabric and beamed proudly at the end of his handy work.

The next stop was at The Brimstone HillFortress National Park where the children toured the fortress, took photo graphs and relived its rich  history.

The students worked in two main groups. The first to second formers concentrated on expository and short story writing while the third to fifth formers focused on persuasive and also short story writing.

Over the two week period,  the students were drilled in basic grammar  and spelling. They were also required to listen to the news and report what was happening around them locally, regionally or intermationally.

Both Mrs. Greenaway and Ms. Williams encourage  all parents to have  their children join the public library, read widely, look at or listen to the news and develop  enquiring minds. These they feel can help to improve the children’s oral and written skills in the English language.

Special thanks to Rituals and Domino’s Pizza for their donation of gift vouchers that were presented to a number of the  students who performed well in a number of areas.

Thanks to all the parents who registered their children for the camp. There are plans to have more camps of a similar nature in the future.
