Social Security scholarship students hike to bloody river

PRESS RELEASE

    Students Enjoy Educational Outing

BASSETERRE St.Kitts, August 31st, 2011 -- The Social Security Board hosted its annual Scholarship Educational Outing on Wednesday 24th August 2011. Forty-five students, accompanied by some of their parents, members of the Board’s Scholarship Committee and supporting staff members of the Social Security Office, along with tour guide Mr. Sheldon Doyling embarked upon a nature hike to the Carib Petroglyphs at Bloody River in Stonefort, St. Kitts.

The unique educational exercise brought the group face to face with the historical landmark. The rock carvings bear evidence to the ingenuity of the indigenous Carib Indians who had inhabited St. Kitts at the time of the coming of Europeans to this part of the world.

The students were given a brief insight into the events of the period by the tour guide as well as by Social Security’s Manager of Public Relations Mr. Chesil Hamilton. They learnt how the Carib Indians were involved in a fierce battle against the European settlers which took place at that location.

This confrontation gave rise to the identification of the venue as Bloody River as a result of the volume of blood that flowed in the stream when the two sides clashed. The students were also enlightened on the significance of the conflict as it related to loss of local ownership of land; and were urged to be vigilant even in their own time to be aware of the importance of domestic economic land ownership.

The scholarship students hailed from the eight public secondary schools in the Federation as well as from the Clarence F. Bryant College on St. Kitts and the Nevis Sixth Form College. The physically challenging hike was followed by a luncheon at Marshalls Restaurant at Frigate Bay on St. Kitts.

The annual extra-curricular activity is designed to foster camaraderie among peers and mentorship between students and Social Security personnel, as well as to instill knowledge in the group of scholars, and to foster nation building.
