BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - The Sandy Point Agricultural Co-operative Society Ltd (SPACS) is showing no signs of slowing down as the members prepare to host their Second Annual Agri-Independence Cultural Expo, to be held on September 17.

The Expo will be held at the Sandy Point Market at 6:30 p.m., following the usual Market Day and midday Ital.
The evening will see performances by members of the Sandy Point Primary School, and music artists such as ITYC, Marshall-C, King Navigator, Alamoulu, among others.

One of the highlights of the evening will be a live performance by Plan-D, an artist out of Barbados who will be amusing the audience with songs promoting Agriculture.

General Manager of the Brimstone Hill Fortress National Park Society, Cameron Gill, is expected to make an address at the Expo.

Lionel ‘Trustme’ Stevens, one of the farmers said that the Expo is a mixture of Agriculture, culture, and the celebration of the Federation’s Independence.

He said that SPACS saw an opportunity to create an activity within the community and they found that around the time of Independence would be reasonable because in celebrating Independence, they could promote Agriculture as well.

Another highlight of the evening will be the releasing of their “Fighting for Food Security” video.

According to Stevens, the video was submitted in the Caribbean Science and Agriculture Film and Video Competition, following a workshop that SPACS attended in Trinidad in December of last year (2010).

Stevens said that the experience in producing the video was one in a lifetime as they acquired a vast amount of knowledge pertaining to film production but more so, about agricultural production which he said is their main focus.

At the Expo, food and drinks will be on sale and give-aways are to be expected.

SPACS will also have their monthly raffle draw where persons who purchased five ‘provision’ items at the Sandy Point Market during the month of August, had their name entered into the raffle.  The winner will receive an EC$50 grocery voucher compliments SPACS.

Entrance to the Expo is EC$5 for adults and children under the age of 12 gain entrance for free. Proceeds from the Expo are said to go towards the much needed repairs of the restrooms at the Market.
