St. Kitts and Nevis Hotel and Tourism Association puts bins on beaches

Michael Head Manager of the St Kitts and Nevis Hotel and Tourism Association and Patricia Wilkinson, Marketing Manager of St Kitts Nevis and Anguilla National Bank
{Basseterre; St. Kitts} There's a new attraction on St. Kitts' busiest beach: Six strategically located garbage bins.

The bins on Frigate Bay's Caribbean strip are being sponsored by the St. Kitts, Nevis and Anguilla National Bank, and are part of an ongoing campaign by the St. Kitts and Nevis Hotel and Tourism Association to keep the islands' beaches in the best condition possible.

Michael Head, General Manager of the HTA, said that the Frigate Bay Development Corp. has joined the initiative by promising to empty the bins on a daily basis.

Said Head: "We're enormously grateful to both the bank and the Frigate Bay Development Corp. for recognizing that we can't compete in the tourism arena with islands like Barbados, Antigua, St. Lucia and Saint Maarten-St. Martin unless our handful of beaches are kept in good shape. This is just a start. We're hoping to have garbage bins on South Friar's, Cockleshell and the Atlantic side of Frigate Bay before too long."~~Adz:Right~~

Added Head: "We're also planning to encourage everyone involved in the tourism industry - our hotels, our business community in general, our government, our restaurants - to pitch in to help upgrade our beach facilities overall. Keeping them clean is just the beginning. We need more toilet facilities and showers. And we're pleading with everyone - tourists and locals - to help by using the new  bins and not just leaving their garbage on the beach. Tourism's now our main industry, our livelihoods depend on it, and we've all got to recognize that and play our part in making it a success."
