~~Adz:Left~~{Basseterre; St. Kitts} The Ministry of National Security and entities which fall under its ambit are reporting that they have outlined a number of strategies aimed at tackling the apparent increase in incidents of crime and violence.

In the most recent Post Cabinet Briefing, it was revealed that when Cabinet met on Monday, it had an audience with the Defence Council which comprises of the Prime Minister of the Federation, the Minister of National Security, the Attorney General, Commander of the Defence Force and Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of National Security along with other members of the top stratum of the Security Forces. It further explained that criminal activity and national security were at the heart of the discussions.

The leaders of the security forces, as noted in the briefing, explained that as part of their strategies the major players in the gangs in St. Kitts have been “identified” and “profiled” which would aid the Security Forces in their anti crime strategies and operations.

“The High Command of the Police Force and the Defence Force summarized the level of criminal activity in the country over the past week and outlined a number of specific strategies that are in operation to deal with the level of criminal activity in the country. In particular, the security forces alluded to the incidence of gang-related criminal activity and presented a detailed picture of the four major gangs in the country. Cabinet was assured that major players in these gangs have been identified and profiled, and that more specific targeting will now be possible,” the release states.

The Police Hierarchy also provided to Cabinet a comprehensive review of the illegal firearms which have been removed from the streets of the Federation and informed of the progress they have made in identifying persons who are suspected of being involved in “the importation and trade of illegal firearms.”

During these discussions, the Hon Attorney General revealed that he had received Commissioner Blades’ report on the inquiry into the alleged sickout of police officers earlier this year. He said he would convene a separate meeting with the High Command of the Police Force to discuss the findings and recommendations in the report, and would also share information with the public on the report at a later date.
