    (Basseterre, St. Kitts):
In a recent press conference hosted at Government Headquarters, Prime Minister Dr. the Hon. Denzil Douglas announced a 5% interim salary increase for civil servants, with back pay from January 1st, 2007, which will be paid out to workers on December 14th.

SKNVibes went out to the streets of Basseterre to hear the opinions of a few civil workers concerning the issue.

Eustace Richards a (Senior High Court Bailiff) noted that any increase is a blessing and it is always welcomed and there is always room for improvement.

A Police Officer was of the opinion that the interim increase was not enough if one takes into consideration the ever increasing cost of living.

    Officer Percival
“I appreciate that they raise my salary although they took long, 5% is ok, am satisfied because I been working sometime without it and because of the type of work I do I didn’t expect nothing big,” said Valentine Jones, an environmental worker.

“I find that it is beneficial because no matter your salary scale is. It would be 5% more of what you would have gotten so am grateful for it,” added Marcia Jeffers, a primary school teacher.

According to the Prime Minister after the results of a review from the Caribbean Centre for Development (CARICARD) is presented  he does not imagine that they will recommend anything less than a 10% increase.
