Nevis Opposition boycotts Opening of Island Assembly

By: Lorna Callender, SKNVibes

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - When the new term of the Nevis Island Assembly opened today (Monday 12 September 2011), absent from the benches were the two opposition members Vance Amory and Alexis Jeffers.

This was not a total surprise since the following press release was received by the media last week:

“This is to inform you that Hons Vance Amory and Alexis Jeffers of the Concerned Citizens Movement Party will NOT be taking part in any proceedings at the House of Assembly on Monday, September 12th 2011.

We continue to believe that there remains an ILLEGITIMATE government in Nevis. An official statement will be released shortly” ...  Sgd Mervin Hanley

The Official Opening was preceded by the customary Royal Salute and Inspection of the Guard of Honour after which Deputy Governor General Eustace John presented the Throne Speech.

Mrs. Christine Springette was sworn in as the new President of the legislative body.

Elected members Hensely Daniel and Robelto Hector were sworn in along with the two nominated members, Carlisle Powell and Dwight Cozier.

Meanwhile the date set for the Election Petition Trial to commence is November 21st, 2011 and it is expected to last for a period of five days.
