Let’s Recognize our Heroes while they are Still alive

Press Releaase

Weekly Message from Lindsay Grant (Political Leader People’s Action Movement)

BASSETERRE St.Kitts, September 13th, 2011 -- There are some aspects of life in our tiny country that really should not be bogged down in politics and recognition of our heroes is one of them. Every society has some system to honour those who have performed in whatever sphere of life with distinction. A very common distinction is being the first.

Those who are first are the pioneers who ignore the well trodden paths and blaze a trail where none exists. They lead the way for others to follow and make an indelible mark on history. In St. Kitts and Nevis there are many firsts, who, because they do not support the Labour Party are not properly recognized as national heroes

In fact, this Labour government seems to act like they were just an accident of history while people who did not do what they did are so recognized.

There is the fact that our first Prime Minister Dr. the Rt. Hon. Sir Kennedy Simmonds is not a national hero. There is the inexcusable fact that there is no national hero from Nevis and in particular no recognition of Dr. Simeon Daniel.

Now there is the refusal to properly honour Kim Collins. I have even heard silliness that Usain Bolt has not been made a national hero in Jamaica and he is the world record holder but the fact is that he, despite his brilliance, is not the first Jamaican to win in an international competition.

The fact is that Kim Collins is the first and this relay team is the first for this nation and for that fact alone they deserve to be properly honoured. The stadium that was built because of Kim Collins should bear his name and each pavilion should be named after his relay team mates. Heroes Day next week is a good time to do the honourable thing!
