Pesticides Awareness Week – September 25th-30th

Press Release

BASSETERRE St.Kitts, September 13th, 2011 -- The Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis will join the wider Caribbean Community in celebrating Pesticide Awareness Week, from September 25th to 30th 2011. The theme for this year’s activities is “Save lives!-Read and Understand Pesticide Labels”.

In conjunction with the Coordinating Group of Pesticides Control Boards of the Caribbean (CGPC), the Departments of Agriculture in both St. Kitts and Nevis will host a week of activities aimed at highlighting the safe use of pesticides in the Federation, while emphasizing the need for improved pesticide management.

Activities planned for Pesticides Awareness Week include Tag Day on September 27th, Pesticides Awareness Day and a Pesticide and Calibration Workshop.

In addition, all pest control operators are invited to register at the Department of Agriculture on Tuesday, 27th September, 2011 from 10 am to 12pm.

Pesticides Awareness Week provides the channel through which the Department of Agriculture informs the general public and producers at large of the need for sustainable agriculture by utilizing less pesticides and increasing the quality of human health and the environment for generations to come.

It is the aim of both Departments of Agriculture to inform the residents about the benefits and risks associated with pesticide use, as well as their role in ensuring the safe and effective use of these chemicals.
