    ROADTOWN TortolaBVI, September 13th, 2011 – Persons wishing to get registered to vote for the 2011 general election have a few more days to do so.

     

    Supervisor of Elections Ms. Juliette Penn speaking to the Department of Information and Public Relations has announced, “With the House of Assembly being dissolved today, Thursday, September 15 is the deadline for persons to register to vote in the upcoming General Election.”She shared, “This is a result of the amendments made to the Elections Act 1994, which explains that after the dissolution of the House of Assembly, eligible persons now have two days to ensure that they are registered to vote in the Territory.”

     

    To be eligible to register to vote, persons must be a Belonger, 18 years of age or older, and domiciled in the Virgin Islands or the United States Virgin Islands. The requirements to register are a birth certificate, Virgin Islands Passport or a Belonger Card. A naturalisation certificate can also be used provided the certificate is dated before June 15, 2007.

     

    “Following the close of registration for the 2011 general election on September 15, The Elections Office will publish the preliminary voters’ list on Monday, September 19,” Ms. Penn shared.

     

    While the date for general election has not been set, section 86 of the Virgin Islands Constitution Order, 2007 requires that an election be held within two months of the dissolution of the House of Assembly.

     

    The Elections Office is located at No. 6 Russell Hill Road, in the Ulric Dawson Building and is open Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
