PRESS RELEASE

    CHARLESTOWN Nevis,September, 13th, 2011 -- Volunteers in Nevis will join millions of volunteers in the world to clean up the island’s beaches on Saturday, September 17th, 2011 from 8.00 a.m according to a press statement issued by the clean-up exercise, Miriam Knorr .

     

    Mrs Knorr has called on those wishing to participate to sign up early.  Various local clubs have already enlisted their participation.  Those who enlist need to collect recording cards and other relevant items.

     

    Last year, 330 persons of all ages and backgrounds and nationalities participated in the noble task and collected 7,314 pounds of litter from a stretch of 9.9 miles.  A total  of 23 beaches were cleaned up.

     

    This year, Solid Management Authority has come on board to support the efforts of International Coast Clean-up campaign.  The Nevis Historical Conservation Society(NHCS) is also involved in the campaign.

     

    Nevis Air and Sea Port Authority, Bank of Nevis Social Club are some of the new groups.  A team of Nevis journalists under the name, Nevis Press Club will cover the event and participate in collecting litter.

     

    At the end of the clean-up exercise, volunteers will be rewarded with a delicious lunch at the Coconut Grove Restaurant.

     

    Over the past 25 years, Ocean Concservancy’s International Coastal Cleanup has become the world’s largest volunteer effort for ocean health.

     

    Nearly nine million volunteers from 152 countries and locations have cleaned 145 million of trash from the shores of lakes, steams, rivers, and the ocean on just one day each year.  They have recorded every item found
