Rehabilitation Important in Fight Against Crime

~~Adz:Left~~Basseterre, St. Kitts (December 19, 2007): The reform of prisoners, along with additional resources such as fingerprinting equipment and additional protective gear are among activities and tools being employed by the Ministry of National Security and law enforcement agencies to reduce crime.

“The Ministry will intensify its efforts and activities in relation to drug reduction counseling, information sharing and public education on the misuse of and abuse of drugs,” Prime Minister Honourable Dr. Denzil Douglas said during his Budget Address.

The St. Kitts and Nevis leader noted that the Ministry of National Security will collaborate closer with the Ministry of Health in the establishment of counseling services for prison inmates suffering from alcohol and drug addictions.

“The challenges that this Ministry face are formidable but this is more than matched by unwavering resolve and commitment of the Ministry to effectively discharge its mandate,” the Prime Minister stressed.

Minister of National Security Honourable G. A. Dwyer Astaphan has personally been doing hands on work with young people trying to influence positive choices thus reducing the need for rehabilitation services. Strategies employed include touring schools, dialoguing with at risk youth and facilitating job opportunities.
