Kim has done it again, Wins silver in Zagreb

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THE medal count which Kittitian sprint star Kim Collins has under his belt increased just today (Sept. 13) when he won silver in the International Amateur Athletics Federation (IAAF) athletics meet held in Zagreb, Croatia.

News broke of Collins’ additional success just hours ago causing persons across St. Kitts and Nevis and even the Caribbean to rejoice at the victory.

Collins placed second to Jamaican’s Usain Bolt who ran a record-breaking 9.85 seconds, and crossed the finish line with 10.01 seconds, just 0.02 seconds ahead of Trinidad and Tobago’s Richard Thompson.

This is Collins’ third medal in weeks.

In 2003, in what many consider to be one of St. Kitts and Nevis’ most memorable and defining moments, Collins was dubbed the World’s Fastest Man, having won the gold medal at the World Championships.

More recently, on August 28, 2011, the Kittitian athlete participated in the IAAF World Championships held in Daegu, South Korea, clocking a time of 10.09 seconds in the 100m race, capturing the bronze medal. Gold medalist for that race was Jamaican Yohan Blake who ran 9.92 seconds and the silver medalist with a 10.08 second-time, was Walter Dix.

September 4 was another successful day for Collins, one which he shared with his colleagues Antoine Adams, Jason Rogers and Brijesh Lawrence. These four, the ‘Relay Boys’, competed in the IAAF’s World Championship 4X100 meters Men’s Relay, and finishing the race in 38.49 seconds, the team won the bronze medal. First and second places were won by the Jamaican and France teams respectively.

As if upping the ante, Collins delivered once again on September 11 at the ISTAF IAAF World Challenge Meet in Berlin, Germany. This time, it was the silver medal! His time for that race was 10.01 and the gold medal was won by Jamaica’s Blake.

He is said to be the man who, because of his 2003 accomplishment, officially “put St. Kitts Nevis on the map”. And if there are those who are yet unaware of St. Kitts Nevis, its people and their capabilities, the athlete's continued success at the international level is evidence enough.
