    Senior Calypso Monarch winner for the third consecutive year- King Konris
    {Basseterre; St. Kitts}
    King Konris has won the Senior Calypso Monarch competition for the third consecutive year! The young calypsonian amassed a total of 844 points, to distance himself from his nearest competitor by 77 points, during an exciting show in front a very large audience at the finals last night, Sunday 30th December. His 3-peat performance has also caused some to say it is the beginning of a dynasty.

    The young man burst onto the stage in the first round with his popular “One Song” and as if to erase any doubt in the judges’ or patrons’ minds, he gave a scintillating performance when he belted out his second song, “Sleeping Tiger.”

    The second song was a virtual response to waves of criticism from other calypsonians, who were of the opinion that King Konris should not have been crowned King last year.

    However, at the song’s conclusion, the crowd erupted into cheers as he effectively distanced himself from the other seven competitors.

    King Konris was crowned by Prime Minister Dr. the Hon. Denzil Douglas, following which the three time King entertained his fans with an encore performance of “Sleeping Tiger” and a little piece of “Walk Away”, one of his more up-tempo compositions.

    The First Runner up spot went to “BigLice”, with 767 points. He sang “In our Hearts Forever” and “The Letter”, which was one of the more popular songs for the evening.

    A mere two points separated Second Runner up from the First Runner up! Lady Sunshine, a newcomer to the calypso arena,
    King Konris during his performance "Sleeping Tiger"
    amassed 765 points with her renditions of “Rum in de Steel Drum” and “Walk a Mile”.

    The Third Runner up spot went to Queen Anastasia, the winner of the Female Calypso title. She was just behind on 763 points with her two tunes, “Only Ten” and “The Deal”.

    The other calypsonians who competed were the King Ayatollah, King Pungwa, the Mighty Pat and King Dis and Dat.

    The crowd at Carnival Village for last night’s calypso show was deemed as one of the largest in recent history and the general consensus was that the show was of a very high standard.

    From the very first calypso, rendered by the King Ayatollah, everyone knew it would have been a memorable night.

    In a very noble gesture as well, the Calypso Sub- Committee made a decision to give ten percent of the net gate receipts to King Ellie, one of the more dominant calypsonians of his day, for medical assistance.

    Just minutes after the King Konris was announced winner of the competition, the airwaves were flooded with comments of congratulation to the King as well as the other winners of the competition.
