Press Release

Basseterre, St. Kitts, September 22nd, 2011 (SKNIS): St. Kitts and Nevis will join with countries around the world in celebration of the life and legacy of the late Eunice Kennedy Shriver (EKS) on September 24, 2011.

Mrs. Shriver, the sister of the late U.S. President John F. Kennedy, is renowned for being a leader in the worldwide struggle to improve and enhance the lives of individuals with intellectual disabilities. Her passion resulted in the founding of Special Olympics, which started as a summer day camp in her backyard in 1962.

Clarice Cotton, National Director of Special Olympics St. Kitts and Nevis, told SKNIS that the Federation will participate in the 2nd Annual Global EKS Day by hosting a rematch of the championship game between the St. Pauls and Village Superstars Football Clubs.

The match will be staged at the Warner Park Football Stadium on September 24 and has a kickoff time of 5:00 p.m. Special athletes will also take to the field in a game of Bocce.

Ms. Cotton encouraged all individuals and families who have no prior involvement with Special Olympics programme to support the event.

The theme of EKS Day is “Play Unified to Live Unified.” Mrs. Shriver died on August 11, 2009.
