ROADTOWN Tortola BVI, October 13th, 2011 – The National Parks Trust of the Virgin Islands (NPT) will host its Ninth Annual Flower Show on 20th November at the Joseph Reynold O’Neal Botanic Gardens under the theme, “A Floral Celebration of 50 Years of Conservation: Come See Our Islands in Colour.”

Deputy Director of the Trust Mrs. Esther Georges appealed to gardeners to “Begin getting your gardens ready to enter in the four competition categories: Large Flower Gardens of more than 250 feet; Small Flower Gardens of less than 250 feet; Specialty Gardens such as cactus or hibiscus gardens; and Porch or Indoor Gardens”.

“We have many passionate gardeners in the Virgin Islands and we’re really looking forward to doubling the entries this year. Since the Trust is celebrating its 50th Anniversary, the aim is to make this year’s Flower Show the biggest ever in terms of entries,” the Deputy Director said.

“Judging of the gardens are based on four main criteria which includes access to and around the garden, the arrangement of plants in the garden, the colour scheme of the garden and the health of the plants in the garden,” Mrs. Georges explained.

“The judges will be looking for how pleasing the garden is and how well-laid out the walkways and the plants are,” said Mrs. Georges continued.

The Flower Show was originally started by the Botanic Society in the 1980’s as a fundraising activity. In 2002, the National Parks Trust took over the coordination of the event with collaboration from volunteers and gardening enthusiasts. The annual event provides an excellent opportunity for adults and children to get involved in the work of the Trust and enjoy the floral beauty of the islands.

Entry forms and the guidelines for the garden competition are available from the J.R. O’Neal Botanic Gardens, the National Parks Trust on Main Street and the Trust’s Office at the Baths, Virgin Gorda.

To have an entry form emailed to you along with the guidelines or any further information please contact the National Parks Trust Office at 852-3650 or email deputydirector@bvinpt.org. The deadline for the competition is on 8th November at 4:30 p.m.
