Press Release

BASSETERRE St. Kitts, October 24th 2011 - Back Street Cricket Club of Mansion has retained the PetroCaribe James Harris T20 Cricket championship for a second year running, after overcoming a formidable Tabernacle Cricket Club by five runs in a final match played at the Mansion Sports Complex on Sunday October 23.

Apart from the traditional PetroCaribe trophy and a cash award of EC$5,000 the club took home, the win also gave them the Dr Timothy Harris Trophy, which was presented to the winning team captain by the Hon Dr Timothy Harris, who is also the area parliamentary representative.

In the third place was Heights Cricket Club, also from Mansion. Other teams in the annual league, which bowled off on Sunday July 31, were Limers Cricket Club of Mansion and Christchurch Cricket Club, who lost the champion to Back Street last year, after having won it back to back, 2008-2009.

In the Sunday’s final match, Back Street batted first and got 59 from 20 overs. Bowling for Tabernacle, C. Carey took 2 for 5 & L. Morrishaw 2 for 20. In Tabernacle batting they were 55 all out in 18.1 overs with Sherwin Whyte making 20 runs. Bowling for Back, Street Mervin Matthew took 2 for 14, Emerson Davis 4 for 4, Myron Lawrence 2 for 8, and J. Matthew 2 for 5.

The narrow loss was a bitter pill to swallow for the Tabernacle team and its fans who had watched in dismay as one of their most dependable batsmen Lenworth Harris, a former St. Kitts national cricketer, limping with injury after scoring four runs. He was replaced by another batsman but upon resumption the injury was aggravated.

Tabernacle fans started shouting from the stands calling for a runner (one who does the running for an injured batsman), but the umpires could not entertain the calls as modern cricket rules do not allow for runners,  reducing Harris to attempt boundaries and sixes. A few of his shots that headed to the boundary were thwarted, and when he was sure that he would have hit a six, he was caught by Johnny Browne off a Myron Lawrence bowling.

The closing ceremony, which was chaired by Irvin Williams, was addressed by Lloyd Lazar who represented the Ministry of Sports, the Hon Dr Timothy Harris, area parliamentary representative who also presented the Dr Timothy Harris to the winning team. A member of the Mansion community Hilarine Lawrence presented the other trophies.

The league’s PRO, John Palmer, thanked all the fans who gave support to the players and the league in general even when some of the league’s early matches were postponed as a result of inclement weather. He also thanked the umpires for the final match, Steve Mangra and Wycliffe Mitchum.
