CHARLESTOWN, Nevis - THE War Memorial Square in Charlestown, Nevis was a hub of activities last Friday as many people turned out to get information on the maintenance of healthy teeth.

According to the Senior Dentist at the Charletown Health Clinic, Hemalatha Aravind, visiting a dentist every six months enables the dentist to treat cavities and gum diseases early enough in order to avoid tooth loss.

She explained that cavity occurs when plaque (a sticky substance that focuses on the teeth) combines with the sugars and starches of the food we eat, and this combination produces acids that attacks tooth enamels.

She also said the best way to prevent cavity is by brushing your teeth twice daily, flossing daily and going for regular check-ups; adding eating healthy foods and avoiding snacks and drinks that are high in sugar are ways that could prevent cavity.

Aravind said when cavity is left untreated it progresses eventually and reaches the nerve.  The tooth at this stage gets infected and needs root canal treatment while early diagnosis enables the dentist to treat cavity by simple filling.

She said treatment at an early stage is less expensive but when sought late is time consuming and requires the patient to make multiple visits which is more expensive.

She appealed to the public to brush their teeth twice a day. She also recommended that people floss their teeth and ensure they visit the dentist every six months.
