BRADES Montserrat, October 31st 2011 – Head of the Governor’s Office Mark Turner, and Director of the Disaster Management Coordination Agency (DMCA) Billy Darroux are in the United Kingdom attending a one-week disaster management workshop at the University of Bournemouth Disaster Management Centre.

The course which runs from October 31 to November 03 will cover topics such as Introduction to Disaster Management, Integrating Strategic Disaster Management in Regional and Island Development, Introduction to Volcanoes (the Montserrat experience) and Media and Communications in Disasters.

On day one, participants received hands-on training on Risk Assessment for various hazards.

Disaster Management Advisor to the Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO) Frank Savage will present a case study and share his perspectives with the participants on his experience as the governor of Montserrat during the volcanic crisis that was interspersed with other events.

This course is put on for Foreign Office staff and Disaster Managers in the Overseas Territories. Representatives from the local Governor’s Office and DMCA have been attending these annual workshops and feature prominently in the discussions because of the ongoing experience of living with an active volcano.
