Tuning up de Iron Band! CHAMBALAY just hours away!

Press Release (SPIRIT)

SANDY POINT, St. Kitts and Nevis, November 3rd 2011 - The sweet sound of the iron band is already coming over the hill and the glare from the Chambalay is visible from afar, all we need now is for you to join in the fun that this year's Chambalay festivities will bring.

Three events spread over this upcoming weekend will lead all roads to Sandy Point, where the community group SPIRIT is set to stage one of its biggest community events, second only to the widely-celebrated Black San Bang-a-lang. Action on November 5 will take place at the Sandy Point New Recreational Ground with the Grassroots Football Exhibition, in collaboration with SPAFA. Giant Malt has already given its stamp of support as lead sponsor, now you need to come out and support the young ballers as they impress you with their newly-acquired football skills.

That Saturday will be a long day, because from as early as 6:30 P.M., the steel pan and the traditional iron band will start cranking up, on the open grounds at Cleverly Hill. All the grandmothers with their pans, the teens and their conch shell horns and their parents with their steel rims will join the colorfully clad Chagredandies mocko jumbies and the first-ever Chambalay Iron band troupe. And it gets better: they will snake through the streets of Sandy Point in an explosion of music and color, and this year's street jam promises to be bigger and better than the last! The troupe packages, including a free T-shirt, specially-made torch and flashing necklace, have been flying off the shelves, and we are in the last days when you'd be able to get yours! So, be sure to contact Laura Richardson at (869) 662 2500.

Later that same night will be the never-before-tried Guinness Street Football Challenge, where teams from all around the island will go head to head in a battle of football to see who would walk away with the spoils from the first challenge of this kind. This is one showdown you can't afford to miss! Top teams from the SKAFA Premier and second-class leagues including Newtown, St. Paul’s, Conaree and The Village will surely bring their best game to the Sandy Point Hard Court, and teams from Sandy Point will be there to take up the challenge as well! Don your colors and come out to support your teams and rock to the beat of MixKlusiv Sounds. ! There'll only be one winner and you'd better be there to witness it as it happens!

All eyes are glued to the Sunday's (Nov. 6) event: Kart Part Olympics, an Olympic-style day of events celebrating local traditional games like pitching, skipping, wheel barrow races and even some barefoot races. Major cycling and marathon events will span the length of Sandy Point and will see fierce competition from dozens of participants. This year, the various communities in Sandy Point are not backing down and spectators will see reps from The Alley, Fig Tree, Crab Hill go up against their counterparts from Cleverly Hill, Mount Idle and The Ghaut. It will be a neck and neck battle until a winner is declared. If your community is not yet represented, come along with your squad and get in on the action! Remember whichever team wins this year will have a full year of bragging rights, and you'd want that to be you!  On hand will be Tombstone International & The Lightz Out Band to help draw the curtains on what promises to be an exciting weekend!

It's a full two days of music, food and fun and there is something for everyone in the family. By simply participating in this weekend's event, you'd get a chance to win jouvert packages from Red Devils as well as the Shiggidy Shack Winnjammers “Buccaneers Jouvert Troupes among many other give-aways. So, by now, you should have your pan washed and you should have spotted your papaya chambalay stem.  There's no reason to stand aside, as Chambalay reignites community SPIRIT and community Pride!
