National Carnival Committee recruitment of judges

Press Release

    BASSETERRE St. Kitts, November 4th 2011 - The National Carnival Committee (NCC) has embarked on a recruitment drive for judges and is inviting members of the public interested in serving as judges for the upcoming calypso and soca monarch competitions, to apply in writing to the Committee.

    Chairman of the Calypso Sub-Committee Mr. Sylvester Anthony, explained that the purpose of this initiative is to expand and diversify the existing pool of judges from which the various panels will be selected to adjudicate this year’s events.

    Mr. Anthony explained that in order to qualify for selection, applicants should possess the following :

    • Knowledge of and exposure to the art form;
    • Knowledge of music generally;
    • Knowledge of and exposure to related art forms such as dramatic presentations, visual arts, etcetera; and
    • Appreciation for the use of language.

    “Once the recruitment process has been completed, we will then embark on a comprehensive and intensive training programme for all potential judges, before selecting the pool which will be used for the competitions this year”, he added.

    “There has been much controversy surrounding the issue of judging of our calypso shows. While complaining about judges is part of the culture of the art form, there is need nonetheless to make the judging process more transparent and far removed from the involvement of and control by the Calypso Sub-Committee and the NCC”, Mr. Anthony commented.

    In describing the process which will be implemented this year, Mr. Anthony explained that a Chief Judge will be appointed who will have the responsibility for assigning judges to the various events and for the supervision of the judging process.

    “As well, calypsonians taking part in the various stages of the competition can expect to receive feedback from the judging process which will enable them to improve their performances as they progress through the competition”, Mr. Anthony promised.

    The Sub-Committee Chairman acknowledged the need to instill greater public confidence in the judging process and stated that the general public as well as the calypsonians taking part in the various competitions can rest assured that there will be no involvement whatsoever of members of the NCC or the Calypso Sub-Committee in the judging process for this year’s competitions.
