BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - FORTY-ONE soca contenders have registered to do battle for the Soca King’s crown in this year’s 40/40 BEAUMONT PARK sponsored Soca Monarch Competition. And this year the Soca pot has been made even sweeter.
As Soca evolves, it is being acknowledged that there is a quick-beat soca and a slower beat soca.
Recently, it was announced that the soca monarch competition will add a “Groovy” category to the competition and persons will see two competitions in one night.
So local artistes can now compete in the "Groovy" Monarch or "Power" Monarch both making one exciting night.
“The difference between the Groovy and the Power categories is the number of beats per minute… Groovy soca has a maximum of 120 beats per minute while Power is above 120,” says Dwayne Sturge, Chairman of the Soca Monarch sub-committee.
The Chairman of the Calypso Sub-Committee of the National Carnival Committee, Mr. Sylvester Anthony, has announced that given the record number of registrants this year, two semi-finals elimination rounds will be held on Thursday, December 1st and Friday, December 2nd 2011 in order to select the nine (9) finalists who will compete against the reigning Soca Monarch King Konris at the Finals slated for Friday, December 23rd 2011.
