ROADTOWN Tortola BVI, November 4th, 2011 – According to Supervisor of Elections Ms. Juliette Penn, as of 12 noon today hundreds had already voted on Advance Polling Day, despite the inclement weather.

Advance Polling Day was designated for those persons who needed extra time to vote and for election officers and police officers who will be working on Polling Day, Monday, November 7. The advance polls will close at 2:00p.m. today. Speaking to the Department of Information and Public Relations Ms. Penn explained, “Advance Polling Day is going well and according to plan, which will help to speed up the process on Election Day. Many of our seniors are taking advantage of the opportunity.”

The Amendments to the Elections Act of 1994 permits a voter who is incapacitated by reason of being an elderly person, (with the definition of an elderly person being seventy years or older), illiterate or any physical cause to be able to vote with the assistance of a friend, and the term friend also includes family and relatives. This category of voter has the option to take advantage of Advance Polling Day.

Polling stations opened at 9:00am this morning and a steady flow of voters could be seen coming and going from each polling station. Also on hand was the team of election observers for the general election. The Joint Observer Mission has been organised by CARICOM and the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) British Islands & Mediterranean Region (BIMR) and is being led by Ambassador Rudolph Collins, former Chairman of the Elections Commissions in Guyana. The role of the Joint Observer Mission will be to observe the BVI elections and to write a report on its findings.

The Supervisor of Elections will be making a statement at 5:30pm this evening to further update the public on what occurred on Advance Polling Day.
