    ROADTOWN Tortola BVI, November 4th, 2011  – The Virgin Islands Fire and Rescue Services Department is encouraging the general public or organisations that may have plans to conduct bonfires on Saturday, November 5 in celebration of Guy Fawkes Night to inform the department at 494-3473 before conducting these activities.Other safety measures that the Deputy Chief noted included finding a suitable site away from flammable liquids and the designation of a safety officer. Dangerous materials such as foam-filled furniture, aerosols tins etc should not be burnt and wind speed and direction should be taken into account before lighting the fire. In addition, Mr. Penn advised that persons dampen the grounds outside the fire, refrain from using flammable liquids such as gasoline, have a container of water nearby and ensure that the bonfire is completely extinguished following the event.

     


    Deputy Chief Fire Officer, Mr. William Penn told the Department of Information and Public Relations that keeping the department aware of burning activities allows for proactive and preventative measures to be put in place along with, efficient preparation in mitigating unnecessary dangers to life and property. According to Mr. Penn organisers of bonfire activities should have safety measures in place to address crowd control and clearing the area of hazardous materials.
