Press Release (SKNIS)

BASSETERRE St. Kitts, November 10th 2011 (SKNIS) - Parents, members of the Special Olympics Board, volunteers and special athletes in St. Kitts and Nevis will devote extra time from November 12 to 19, 2011 to help “Create A World of Inclusion, Dignity and Respect.”

That’s the theme for this year’s Special Olympics Week of Activities. The Minister with responsibility for Sports and Youth Honourable Glenn Phillip will make an address to declare the awareness week open.

In the speech that will be broadcast on national radio on Saturday, Minister Phillip is expected to highlight the successes of Special Olympics St. Kitts and Nevis on and off the field as it works to develop special athletes. He also will note the contributions of the staff of the Cotton-Thomas Comprehensive School and other partners of the organization.

On Sunday 13, a service will be held at the Church of God, Durant Avenue. The following day, Board members and others will visit various primary and secondary schools throughout the island to sensitize young people about the challenges faced and contributions made by the athletes of Special Olympics. On Tuesday, persons are encouraged to tangibly display their support for the movement by purchasing a small tag.

Wednesday, November 16 is dubbed Appreciation Day and dignitaries as well as public and private sector agencies will host athletes at various activities. The day will be capped with an appreciation reception at Government House to be hosted by Governor General His Excellency Sir Cuthbert Sebastian.

Other activities include a 7:00 p.m. panel discussion at the University of the West Indies Open Campus, on November 17, a street parade on November 18, and a gospel concert at the Church of God at Durant Avenue on November 19.

Activities will conclude on November 26, 2011 with a Healthy Fitness Run.

Locals are encouraged to support the week of activities.
