BASSETERRE St.Kitts, November 15th, 2011 -- Ten students battled against each other during the first night of the ‘Best in Class Primary School Quiz Competition’ on Tuesday, 8th, November, 2011 at the Sir Cecil Jacobs Auditorium of the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank.The competition, held for schools in the Basseterre Public Zone, was the first semi-final competition.
The event, sponsored and organized by the St. Christopher Air and Sea Ports Authority, brought together teams of sixth graders of the Beach Allen, Tucker Clarke, Deane-Glasford, Irish Town and Dr. William Primary Schools.
Participating students were quizzed individually, as a team and in speed rounds on the core subjects of the Grade Five curriculum (Language Arts, Mathematics, Social Studies and Science). Questions were also asked about SCASPA.
After an intense two hour competition, the Beach Allen Primary won the competition with a score of sixty-five points while the second position team, Tucker Clarke Primary School scored forty-five points. The Deane-Glasford and Irish Town Primary Schools received a tied score of forty points. The Dr. William Connor Primary
School came in fifth position with thirty-points.
The Beach Allen Primary School advanced to the final competition which will be held on Thursday, 1st December, 2011. When asked about how she felt about her school’s victory, Teacher and Trainer, Mrs. Shenel Byron-Cassius said, “I am very proud of my students.
We will work on our weak areas such as sentence construction and identifying the subject of sentences to get them prepared for the other competitions.”
Shannique Herbert of the Tucker Clarke Primary School took the title of the Most Outstanding student in that night’s competition with a total of thirty-five points. Ms. Herbert informed SCASPA that she is proud of her achievement and is proud of her school’s second place position.
“ I am very proud of myself for winning the title “Most Outstanding Student”. I tried and trained very hard for the competition, I entered the competition with confidence and I feel good about my performance. I also feel very happy that my school came second, we did well as a team.”
Head Judge, Ms. Jihan Williams, stated that, “It was an impressive attempt from SCASPA. The children were a bit nervous but at the end they received their rhythm and did a good job. It was good to see the support from the schools but I wish more people from the public were in attendance.”
Best in Class has raised SCASPA’s profile in the community and among the schools and students of St. Kitts and has generated a greater understanding of and appreciation for SCASPA’s role in national development. Additionally, participating students have been afforded the opportunity to compete in a healthy competition and be awarded attractive prizes.
The next date for the semi-final competition for schools in the East Zone will be held on Tuesday 15th November, 2011 at the Sir Cecil Jacobs Auditorium at 6: 00 p.m. Competing schools will be the Saddlers, Joshua Obadiah Williams, Edgar T. Morris, Cayon, Violet Petty Primary Schools.
Officials included Moderator, Clarence Fitzroy Bryant College Economics Lecturer, Ms. Unoma Allen, a panel of three judges and four scorers.
