Press Release

BASSETERRE St. Kitts, November 16th 2011 - Scotiabank will be unveiling its New Kiddy Cricket Mascot “Chirpy The Cricket” at the 2012 Digicel Series which begins in St Vincent next March. Chirpy the Cricket was the winning entry submitted by 12 year old Daniel Lashly from Harrison College in Barbados in the Sotiabank’s Regional Kiddy Cricket Design a Mascot Competition, which ran throughout the region earlier this year. Young Lashley’s entry “Chirpy the Cricket” copped the top position when weighed against 12 other national winners from across the English Caribbean who entered the Scotiabank’s Regional Kiddy Cricket Design a Mascot Competition.

In addition to his national prize of a Nintendo DS, Lashly walked away with a laptop computer and the bragging rights of influencing the design of the new Scotiabank Kiddy Cricket mascot.  The final mascot design to be unveiled in the Series will vary slightly from Lashly original entry as slight amendments were made to re-polish and refine the design to make it more applicable and practical for use.

Daniel’s “Chirpy the Cricket” got a resounding 152 from a maximum of 175 points when it was assessed by a panel of regional judges from the West Indies Cricket Board and Scotiabank. Chirpy was found to be the best entry based on use of colour, creativity, originality, artistic skill, spirit and practicality of the design. The second and third place winners are Stello the Steel Pan from Trinidad and Fire Ant from Antigua. The 2nd place entry Stello was submitted by Ronaldo Stookram whose entry copped 129 points and was some distance away from Chirpy the Cricket. While the third place entry Fire Ant was submitted by John Rayne and was scored at 128 points, a mere 1 point difference to the second place winner.

The competition attracted over 6000 entries from students across the region when it was launched on January 4. KJ Singh, Kiddy Cricket Officer for the West Indies Cricket Board was delighted with the high quality response to the programme. “The entries have definitely exceeded our expectations in the artistic and creativity departments. The competition also had a written component which was most inspiring as it demonstrated that children are very much aware and knowledgeable about cricket.” He added that the “overall initiative has definitely achieved our goal of helping us find a new mascot and also energised the children for this next year’s programme.”

Meanwhile, Simone Hull, Scotiabank’s regional sponsorships manager for the English Caribbean also expressed how pleased the Bank was with the execution of the promotion and the entries received. She said: “The competition went really well and has helped to significantly lift awareness about the Scotiabank Kiddy Cricket Programme. It has given children the opportunity not just to participate for the chance to win a great prize, but gave them an avenue to play a real role in shaping the new direction of the programme. Their ideas will now inspire what the new mascot and the face of the programme turns out to be.”

Chirpy’s introduction at cricket will officially signal the end of reign for Clarence the Crab who served as the Scotiabank Kiddy Cricket Mascot for the past 12 years.
