    ROADTOWN Tortola BVI, November 16th, 2011 – Acting Director of the Department of Human Resources Mrs. Michelle Donovan Stevens reported that Public Officers in the community of Jost Van Dyke will have the opportunity to gather practical information about how to lead a healthier lifestyle at a Wellness Fair on Friday, November 18.

    The fair which will take place at the Jost Van Dyke Methodist Church Hall from 9:30am to 2:30pm is an initiative of the Department’s Employee Relations Unit and is being held under the theme, “Eat Well, Exercise Well, Live Well and be Sugar Free.”

     

    Among the participants will be BVI Health Services Authority who will be conducting screening such as Dental, Diabetes and Hypertension. Additionally, free Prostate Screening will be conducted complements of Hyperion Risk Solutions in conjunction with Bupa Insurance Company (Latin America and the Caribbean).

     

    Other participants are the Department of Human Resources’ Benefit’s, Health and Safety and Employee Relations Units, Nature’s Way, the National AIDS Programme and other Government Departments such as Agriculture, Conservation & Fisheries and Solid Waste.

     

    Manager of the Employee Relations Unit Mrs. Clearlie Brown, told the Department of Information and Public Relations that wellness programmes such as this are crucial to our employees’ overall health and wellbeing. “It is our firm belief that this initiative will help to reap significant benefits for the Public Service through higher productivity and decreased medical claims,” Mrs. Brown shared.

     

    Much of what will be shared in this forum will be focused on preventative education necessary to combat some of the illnesses that generated the highest number of insurance claims reported to the Department of Human Resources’ Benefits Unit in 2011, according to Benefits Manager, Ms. Lisa Donovan.

     

    This Wellness Fair is part of the Department of Human Resources’ Wellness Programme for Public Officers. The programme also includes counselling and referral services through the Employee Assistance Programme (EAP); discounted membership to local gyms; educational workshops and activities; HIV/AIDS Workplace sensitisation and other types of work-related mentorship.
