Press Release

ROADTOWN Tortola BVI, November 15th, 2011 – The Ministry of Health and Social Development, in collaboration with the Pan American Health Organisation (PAHO), will convene a Family Health Strategy Meeting with various members of the health care sector in efforts to guide the development of programmes for the care and treatment of patients that access health services in the Virgin Islands.

The Family Health Strategy Meeting will be held on November 16, facilitated by PAHO/WHO Consultant, Dr. Betzabe Butron, who will provide an overview of the Caribbean Family Strategy; and Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Irad Potter.

The Chief Medical Officer stated, “The objective of this strategy is to provide a comprehensive guide for the care and treatment of individuals by health care providers that addresses the needs of individuals and their families, throughout their lifecycle.”

The Virgin Islands Family Health Strategy is being adopted from the Caribbean Community Family Health Strategy by the Ministry of Health and Social Development as a strategic framework for health care delivery.

This initiative seeks to standardise the care and treatment provided to patients throughout the Territory with emphasis on Primary Health Care and strengthening the integration of health care.

The strategy focuses on the family as a unit, with emphasis placed on health promotion, epidemiologic trends, disease prevention and protection, and other health related issues throughout the lifespan of an individual.

The Ministry of Health and Social Development endeavours to provide leadership that promotes health, social well-being and a safe environment.
