Fungi fest, book fair and extravaganza to highlight culture week

    ROADTOWN Tortola BVI, November 14th, 2011 – The Department of Culture is encouraging public participation in their full slate of activities ongoing this week for Culture Week 2011 under the theme, “From Whence We Came: Our Virgin Islands History.”

    Major events scheduled to take place include a Cultural Extravaganza at the Bregado Flax Educational Centre on Virgin Gorda on Wednesday, November 16 and the first-ever local author Book Fair on Thursday, November 17 at the Department of Youth Affairs and Sports conference room from 9:30 am to 3 pm.

     

    The local author book fair will feature books from eight local authors for purchase. The authors will also be on hand to autograph copies of their books.

     

    Friday, November 18th is packed with a number of community events including a Food Fair with cultural demonstrations including basket weaving, drumming, fish pot mending and tyre-broom making at the Noel Lloyd Positive Action Movement Park from 10 am. The community is encouraged to dress in their cultural costumes on this day.

     

    The ‘Basics of Fish Pot Making Workshop” co-hosted by the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College will be held on Saturday at the same venue.

     

    The fifth annual Virgin Islands Fungi Fest will take place at the Noel Lloyd Positive Action Movement Park on November 18 and 19 from 7 pm nightly. Featured artists include the ‘Ole Time Jammers’ from Tobago; “The Quelbe Ambassadors” from St. Croix; “Flambo Combo” from St. Thomas; “The Jolly Boys” from St. Martin; and local bands ‘Zion Sounds’ and “Razor Blades from the Virgin Islands.

     

    Deputy Director of Culture Mrs. Brenda Lettsome-Tye is soliciting community support to make these events a success. Additionally, students are invited to participate in the Culture Week Quiz being aired on ZBVI Radio and listen to the special almanac features titled the “Untold Stories” on that same station.

     

    This evening, a GIS Public Eye will be aired on JTV Channel 51 from 6 pm on Virgin Islands Culture with guests to include senior lectures at the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College Dr. Michael Kent and Dr. Katharine Smith, the Deputy Director of Culture Mrs. Brenda Lettsome-Tye and a former Minister of Education and Culture Ms. Eileene Parsons.

     

    Culture Week is held annually in November to highlight and showcase Virgin Islands culture. It was first celebrated in 1994 and strives to promote and preserve the Territory’s cultural heritage.
