Press Release (SKNIS)

BASSETERRE St. Kitts, November 16th 2011 (SKNIS) - The Community Health Services of St. Kitts and its partners are promoting the physical wellbeing of residents by means of another Community Health Outreach.

On this occasion, the Outreach is directed at residents from College Street Ghaut, Basseterre to West Farm who are being invited to get free HIV, blood sugar and blood pressure screenings as well as Body Mass Index (BMI) assessments.  Presentations will also address the topics: Breast Cancer, Adolescent Health, Pap Smears, Mental Health and Men’s Health.  Persons attending will receive demonstrations of breast and testicular examinations.

The Outreach is designed for the convenience of residents of the mentioned area and so takes place over a two-day period, Friday, November 18 and Saturday, November 19.  All of the mentioned screenings and presentations will take place at the Best Buy Supermarket parking lot from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. daily.  For privacy, pap smears and breast examinations will take place at the Basseterre Health Centre on Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and on Saturday, from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Davida Irish, Community Health Nurse based at the Basseterre Health Centre noted that the objective is to make the health services as accessible as possible.

“Our area at the Basseterre Health Centre covers from College Street Ghaut, Basseterre to West Farm and we wanted to reach out to working females in particular, as well as those who might be going shopping at Best Buy,” Nurse Irish explained.  “We have found that the number of women going for pap smears has decreased and this test is very important considering that it can help prevent cervical cancer.   We also want to encourage our men, who we find often don’t visit the Doctor, to come and get their screenings.  Adolescents are of concern to us considering that there is an increase in teen pregnancy, so they need to come to our presentations on adolescent health. Our aim is to encourage all persons in our society to maintain healthier lifestyles.”

The Basseterre Community Health Outreach is a collaborative effort between the National AIDS Secretariat, the Government Laboratory of the Joseph N. France General Hospital, the Community Health Services along with partners such as the management of Best Buy Supermarket.
