BASSETERRE St. Kitts, November 21st 2011 (SKNIS) - Federal Parliamentarians will join with youth leaders, activists, proud parents and guardians as well as staff of the Ministry of Youth Empowerment to celebrate the “25 Most Remarkable Teens in St. Kitts and Nevis.”
Youth Director Geoffrey Hanley told SKNIS that a special sitting of the National Assembly will be held on Wednesday, November 23, 2011 where the stories of the selected candidates will be highlighted and awards presented by the various elected members. The session will begin at 7:30 p.m. and will be broadcast live on national television and radio.
The 25 youth were selected from a pool of 100 persons who were nominated in various categories including Courage to Overcome, Music, Leadership, Civic Involvement, Most Promising Teen, Community Service, Spiritual Commitment and the like.
United States Peace Corps Volunteer Connie Howard is spearheading the activity for the Department of Youth Empowerment. “I am impressed and truly inspired by the stories of the young people and I am confident that persons will be as moved as I was,” she stated.
One such story notes the courage of Dylan, 18, who often got into fights at his high school due to a “quick fuse.” He has since learnt to control his anger by practicing anger management skills, and shares these techniques in order to help others.
Renecia, 17, is guided by her strong religious beliefs. She ministers in the community and talks to prisoners as part of that commitment. Sharing that message of hope and faith is especially meaningful to her. Renicia believes it is important to find your purpose in life and to live a life that is admirable. She consistently looks for opportunities to serve, and lives to serve others.
What makes Raheem, 12, especially remarkable is his ability to channel his love for animals into something truly enterprising. Several years ago, his uncle gave him a donkey to care for and Raheem turned this gift into a thriving enterprise. Raheem began posing for photographs with the donkey for tourists, eventually offering donkey rides. He charges $1.00 for a photograph and $2.00 for a ride. On being a successful business man at the age of 12, Raheem says “it makes me feel special and smart.” Raheem is a confident and determined young man.
The 25 Most Remarkable Teens in St. Kitts programme is modeled after a similar programme in California, USA. Ms. Howard’s decision to replicate the award initiative was based on an expression by the Minister of Youth Empowerment Honourable Glenn Phillip to raise the profile of positive youth doing remarkable things.
