BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THE people of St. Christopher and Nevis have much to give thanks for, including being spared the ravages of the 2011 Atlantic Hurricane Season.
Although not yet concluded, the present hurricane season produced 18 named storms with six developing into hurricanes, three of which developed into major hurricanes.
St. Kitts-Nevis was hit by none of these, although Hurricane Maria came close.
A press release issued by the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has called for the nation to engage in a period of thanksgiving to God for His hand of protection over the Federation during the season.
National Disaster Coordinator Carl Herbert, according to the release, indicated that predictions for the season were accurate, and although St. Kitts-Nevis was spared a rather active period was realised.
Promoting an attitude of thanksgiving, the press release explains that plans are on the front burner to “endorse a nationwide service of thanksgiving, for the protection of St. Kitts and Nevis during the 2011 Hurricane Season”.
“Expressing thanks for an uneventful hurricane season has always been of priority to the local disaster management fraternity, and this year is no exception…Accordingly, Saturday 3rd and Sunday 4th December, 2011 have been identified as National Days of Worship, in order to provide a familiar setting for persons to celebrate God’s mercies during their usual service. The entire nation is therefore incited to partake of this offering by joining in a gathering of their choosing to celebrate the protection received by St. Kitts and Nevis during this past Hurricane Season.”
The Atlantic Hurricane Season commences on June 1 and concludes on November 30 each year.
