BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – SKINNY Jeans, one of fashion’s most timeless creations has been a sought-after item worn by both males and females to date in the fashion arena. I am sure you own one, don’t you?
Over the years the fashion item has derived stylish names such as Slim-fit-pants, stovepipes, Asian tight-pants, pegs, skinnies or cigarette pants due to the jean’s distinct snuggly appearance that ends in a small opening at the ankle.
The style of pants came about in the 1950’s when the famous, late Rock and Roll singer Elvis Presley wore a slim-fitting jean that surprised many.
Elvis Presley was known as the king of bell bottoms but when he donned the then drainpipe jeans, that somewhat made a change-over in the fashion world.
It was then the relationship between Rock and Roll stars and tight jeans birthed a ‘bad boy’ image that many favoured highly and remain so to date.
However, by the 1990’s the popular slim-fitting jeans became old-fashioned and was replaced by baggy jeans influenced by hip-hop and rap artistes such as Snoop Dogg, Ice cube and Jay Z
Rest in peace skinny Jeans right?
Wrong! By the 2000’s the re-named Skinny Jeans made a fashion statement throughout the world when women started wearing them in neon colours.
The fashion then quickly spread to children and young men by 2006.
Conversely, Skinny Jeans for males are made a bit different with the waist being loose and having a baggy effect but upholding the name ‘skinny’ by being tightly fitted on the legs.
But are they coming off a bit feminine?
No! Instead, it is considered to be a way of keeping up with the fashion trend in which the interest of many of us have peaked.
In the Caribbean, men’s Skinny Jeans is a very dominant fashion swirl especially in the island of Jamaica.
This trend can be seen within the twin-island federation of St. Kitts and Nevis where women and men alike sport this style.
Local stars such as Infamus, Footsy and television favourite Jason ‘Pinocchio’ Mitcham are just a few that keep up with this trendy style.
To date skinny jeans is still one of fashion’s most controversial items but it has been doing very well on the Market.
