ROADTOWN Tortola BVI, November 24th, 2011  – The Ministry of Communications and Works is forging ahead with its plans to rehabilitate Road Town by first fixing the parking lot adjacent the Peebles Hospital.

Minister for Communications and Works Honourable Mark Vanterpool told the Department of Information and Public Relations, “We began with this location to facilitate the National Parks Trust’s Jazz Festival, which is one of the activities for its 50th anniversary celebration as it will require a great deal of parking.”
“This is only step one on a long list of improvement measures to improve the aesthetics of the capital,” he said.

“In terms of the greater good for the Virgin Islands community, once completed the parking lot will now be able to provide three times more parking and it will also increase pedestrian safety as dangerous pot holes and openings in the area will be fixed,” the minister explained.

Honourable Vanterpool revealed that they will improve drainage in the parking lot and also have the area paved by Friday, November 25 and thereafter the parking lot will be marked to maximise use.

The project is a collaborative effort spearheaded by the Public Works Department (PWD) in concert with the private sector.

The minister confirmed that the project is being carried out very economically with the brunt of the work being shouldered by PWD and resources tapped from an existing contract with BVI Paving Ltd. signed last year to resurface roads damaged during the 2010 hurricanes and floods.

The Road Town rehabilitation project will seek to improve the beauty of the capital while increasing pedestrian safety and improving parking.
