Education Minister begins territory-wide assessment of schools

ROADTOWN Tortola BVI, November 24th, 2011 – As part of Government’s commitment to evaluate and improve the education system, Minister for Education and Culture Honourable Myron V. Walwyn is visiting public and private schools Territory-wide to review areas in need of assessment.

Speaking with the Department of Information and Public Relations, Minister Walwyn said, “A quality education should be within the reach of every child and it is Government’s goal to ensure that our students are prepared to meet the demands of our local job market and succeed in a regional and global marketplace.”

Honourable Walwyn continued, “A sound education system is critical to our future development and we must have systems in place that addresses achievement gaps, improve student achievement and cater to the specific learning requirements that will propel us with a competitive edge.”

The Minister’s assessment of schools began with his first official visit to the Robinson O’Neal Memorial Primary School on Virgin Gorda on November 23. This was immediately followed by a visit to the Primary and Secondary Divisions of the Bregado Flax Educational Centre and the Little Rainbow School.

During his visits the Minister met with principals, faculty and students of the institutions. The principals took the opportunity to discuss major challenges and concerns.

The Minister was accompanied by the Acting Chief Education Officer Ms. Beverlie Brathwaite, Personal Assistant Ms. Karen Vanterpool and Sister Island Coordinator Mr. Vincent Wheatley.

Next week, the Minister is scheduled to visit schools on Jost Van Dyke and Anegada before embarking on tours to the schools housed on Tortola.

The territory-wide assessment reinforces the Ministry of Education and Culture’s commitment to improving the Territory’s education system by offering a solid, complete education that which will enrich the lives the Territory’s students and residents.
