Wacky Friday brings out creative skills in pre-schoolers

By: Terresa McCall, SKNVibes.com

To become regular fixture on school’s schedule

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – IT was indeed a wacky Friday at the St. Peters Pre-School when the regular garb was ditched just for today (Nov. 25) and replaced with exciting, creative and – in some instances – madcap getups.

With some degree of obvious enthusiasm, the colourfully-attired students entered the school’s compound anxiously anticipating the moment when they would display their costumes to their classmates.

One by one the students made their way to their various classrooms in masquerade costumes, bull costumes, Santa Claus, the Little Drummer Boy, elf costumes, reindeer and even a farmer costume.

Pre-school teacher Trevia Saddler told this publication that she gave birth to the Wacky Friday idea while in attendance of one of the institution’s staff meetings.

“It was my idea to come up with a day for the children just to have fun; to take them out of the classroom but to still have a learning environment. One which centers on the Christmas and Carnival theme especially since that season is fast approaching.

“We decided to have a Wacky Friday where we could raise funds and still teach the children about Christmas and Carnival.”

It is true that the institution is accustomed to hosting its Mufti Fridays. However, Saddler explained that the major differences between Mufti Fridays and Wacky Fridays are the educational factor and the theme orientation.

As part of the morning session, a mini fashion show was held where students strutted and indicated to their counterparts the type of costume which they wore. Teachers were on hand to provide additional information to the students about the significance of the costume to the season.

Pre-school teachers – who seemed to be having more fun than the children – were not left out of the mix and had also donned their creative clothing which were just as whacky as the children’s.

Their outfits included mismatched colourful socks, mismatched shoes, nightgowns and a hairstyle featuring a multiplicity of ribbons.

As an added perk, the students were treated to pizza for their lunch, which they themselves had prepared. They were also given a special snack during the afternoon session.

Parents were required to pay $7 for the Wacky Friday, two of which went towards the pre-school’s fundraising initiative and the remainder towards the special lunch.

Saddler indicated to SKNVibes that Wacky Fridays would be a regular fixture on the institution’s calendar to coincide with major celebrations in the year. She said it is likely that the next one would fall around Valentine’s Day.
